<image:title>Become a Volunteer - “As a defense attorney, I often think about over-incarceration and the criminal justice system. Pro bono work is a tangible way to respond to these issues. Working with SCP was a way to learn about what it actually means to be incarcerated for life and the journey that a human being goes through. You see the ability of people to change and transform their lives. It is a rare and unique opportunity.”</image:title>

      <image:title>Blaze Vincent - Blaze Vincent</image:title>
<image:caption>Paralegal Vidal “Blaze” Vincent was tried as an adult and convicted of Attempted Murder and Assault at the age of 17. He was sentenced to 30 years and six months. He would have received no more than 4 years had he been tried as a juvenile. In light of the Washington State Supreme Court’s decision in State v. Blake, Blaze was resentenced and immediately released from incarceration in 2022 after serving 18 years. The sentencing judge held that Blaze was more valuable to society outside of prison than inside because of his rehabilitation and commitment to service. Despite prison conditions that were unsuitable for youth, Blaze grew to become a peer mentor and community advocate. While incarcerated, he earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business Management from Grays Harbor College with a 3.8 GPA, a paralegal diploma from Blackstone Career Institute, and Competent Communication and Competent Leadership Awards from Toastmasters International, as well as a myriad of other certificates for completing positive programs. While incarcerated, Blaze co-created a successful behavioral health program called the Redemption Project alongside Anthony Powers and Karlton Daniel. Before his release, he was serving as Vice President of the Harbor Lights Toastmasters club and facilitator of the Black Prisoners Caucus legislative committee at Stafford Creek Corrections Center. He also continues to serve as a contributor to Kids are Kids, a grassroots community-based organization that seeks to abolish laws that cause juveniles to be tried as adults in Washington state. Blaze continues his lifelong commitment to service alongside his wife, Dyneeca, with massive support from family, friends, and his community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Post-Release Reentry Specialist In November 2000, at just 28 years old, Jerry was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole after being convicted of one count of first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree robbery under Washington State’s 3 Strikes Law. However, in 2021, his life took a pivotal turn when new legislation removed second-degree robbery from the list of strikeable offenses, leading to his release that summer. Upon returning home, Jerry wasted no time in pursuing a new chapter in his life. He enrolled in college, earning his associate's degree in applied technology (AAT) in web development by the summer of 2023. Although he initially planned to launch a career in the tech industry, Jerry discovered a deeper calling in the reentry space—a field where his personal experiences could fuel meaningful change for others navigating similar paths. Jerry began as the Site Coordinator at a men’s transitional home in South Seattle’s Skyway neighborhood, where he provided guidance and support to those reentering society. His dedication and impact in this role led him to his current position as the post-release reentry specialist at the Seattle Clemency Project, where he continues to advocate for and assist individuals on their journeys to rebuild their lives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>On Redemption - On Redemption</image:title>
<image:caption>Each time someone comes home, a part of our beautiful state becomes whole again. The Seattle Clemency Project is excited to announce the release of On Redemption: Second Chances and the Post-Conviction Landscape in Washington State. This book shares sixteen stories of resilience, atonement, and mercy, offering a narrative perspective on the second-look landscape in Washington. Each of the participants experienced long-term incarceration or immigration detention before they were granted clemency, juvenile parole, resentencing, or post-conviction relief in the form of a pardon or vacate. The value of this project lies in the vulnerability and transparency of the people who were willing to share the complete truth of their lives. Their courage will resonate with people on both sides of freedom who are looking for stories of struggle and survival through which they can begin to write their own. Excerpt from the introduction: “In no way are these chapters reflective of the totality of their lives. But they share honest and emotional accounts of how a person’s circumstances and choices can lead them somewhere unthinkable. At the heart of each story is a deeply held belief that people are capable of more than who they’ve been or what they’ve done. These individuals have taken accountability for the harm they caused and found a way to move forward without shame. Their lives are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the propensity each of us holds to begin again.” With a foreword by Washington State Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu, On Redemption shows that even in the face of irreparable acts, there is healing power in redemption.</image:caption>
